Glimmingehus in southeast Skåne is one of Scandinavia’s best preserved medieval castles. A magnificent building which was begun in 1499 on the assignment of Jens Holgersen Ulfstand. Guided tours around the castle are available as well as partaking of medieval chores, relaxing in the herb garden or enjoying the restaurant’s special medieval plate.
During the 15th C it became common among wealthy families in Skåne as well as among nobility and bishops to build their dwelling-houses in stone. One could afford to abandon the older constructions in wood and half-timber for more stable stone constructions. The castle buildings were in themselves a protection against farmer uprisings but more often it was comfort rather than defense functions which motivated the construction.
